Marta Garcia-Lastra holds a diploma and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Deusto (Spain). She complemented her training by obtaining postgraduate degrees related to her teaching and her research topics. She has also spent time in national and international institutions (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris), Université Paris V, Trinity College (Dublin), etc.).
Since 2000 she has been working as a lecturer in the sociology department of the University of Cantabria (UC). She has a long research career which began in 1996 as a researcher at the University of Cantabria. During these years she has held various positions on different projects. It is worth mentioning her participation in several of them linked to the National Research Plan (R + D + i projects, for example “Analysis of educational inclusion / exclusion processes in compulsory education”, “Development of local projects for change and improvement of schools”, “Schools heading towards educational inclusion, or “Cultural diversity in schools: discourses, policies and practice”). In addition, she has been the principal researcher for regional projects funded by regional calls for proposals. Internationally, she has collaborated with the U. Pedagógica Nacional de México on the development of a network of researchers. A number of her research results have been published in national and international journals indexed in databases such as JCR, ISOC, CLASE, REDALYC, Social Sciences Citation Index, etc. For example, articles published in Women’s Studies International Forum, Revista de Educación or Convergencia. Revista de Ciencias Sociales (all in JCR), Perfiles educativos (Index of Mexican scientific and technological research journals – Conacyt). Additional publications released in books edited by prestigious publishers such as Civitas, Narcea or Icaria, deserves to be mentioned.
She is a reviewer for journals such as Convergencia, Revista de Ciencias Sociales (JCR), Revista Internacional de Sociología (JCR), Revista Electrónica Interuniversitaria de Formación del Profesorado, Géneros, Multidisciplinary Journal of Gender Studies or International and Multidisciplinary Journal of Social Sciences (RIMCIS).
Since the beginning of her career as a researcher, she has participated in national and international conferences to present the main results of her work. To date, she has defended more than fifty communications and / or articles. She has also participated in the scientific and organisational committee for the latest conferences of the Association of Sociology of Education, at the international congress “Inclusive Education Today: scenarios and protagonists”, funded by the Ministry of the Economy and Competitiveness (secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation) and the 13th International Congress on Teacher Training.
In the field of higher education management, she has held a variety of positions, and is currently Vice-Rector for Students and Employment at the University of Cantabria. She was dean of the faculty of education and vice-dean of postgraduate studies at the same institution and coordinator of the inter-university doctoral program in equity and innovation in education. She is also director of the Isabel Torres Classroom for Women and Gender Studies at the University of Cantabria, and oversees the development of gender studies in the educational community in particular and in Cantabrian society in general. She is chair of the Sociology of Education Research Committee of the Spanish Federation of Sociology.
