“Taking parents into account and transdisciplinary approaches seem to me to be essential bases for the creation of quality systems at the service of children with special educational needs and their families. In addition, they help to establish symmetrical power relations, participate in the empowerment of the actors concerned, and, ultimately, in the development of a more inclusive society. ”
Florence Wolfahrt Schillinger initially trained in clinical curative pedagogy, and later in special needs education and early special needs education. She has followed several postgraduate training courses in specialized pedagogy (CAS Visual Deficits HEP), in psycho-bodily approaches (among others in the sensorimotor assessment of Bullinger Unige) and in team management and project management (EESP certificate – current HETSL).
She has been active for almost 20 years in the field of special needs pedagogy. She has worked, both individually and as part of a collective, with children and students with special educational needs and their families, at home (as part of an itinerant educational service targeting visual impairment), in specialized educational structures (therapeutic kindergarten or classes) or in an inclusive environment (child care centres, regular classes) ; for 7 years she was also the pedagogical manager of a special needs education boarding school for pupils with intellectual disabilities with or without associated disorders.
Since 2017, she has held a teaching position within the UER PS of the HEP Vaud. As part of the training of the Maîtrise en Education Précoce Spécialisée (MAEPS) [Masters in Specialized Early Education] a joint training program between HEP Vaud and Unige, she is responsible for several training and teaching modules, she manages the supervision of master's theses and coordinates a large part of the practical work at MAEPS. From 2017 to 2019, she took over the responsibility of a Specialized Pedagogy CAS: option Visual impairment. Since 2021, she has been in charge of the coordination of the first CAS HEP practitioner training adapted for early special needs education.
These various experiences have led her to develop a holistic vision of the field of special needs pedagogy.
Florence Wolfahrt Schillinger focuses her attention on approaches promoting prevention, screening, and interventions with young children “at risk” in their development, in connection with their environment, from a developmental and eco-systemic perspective.
Currently, she is particularly interested in parenthood support during vulnerable situations, family-centred approaches, as well as parent-professional and professional and inter-professional collaboration modalities.
Florence Wolfahrt Schillinger is one of the founding members of the Groupe Intercantonal de recherche collaborative en education précoce spécialisée (GRICEPS) [Intercantonal Collaborative Research Group in Specialized Early Education], institutionally attached to the University of Geneva through the PRINSEPS research team (Professor Chatenoud). The members of this group come from a community of actors in the field of early specialized education (Education Précoce Spécialisée – EPS). Founded in 2019, GRICEPS aims to conduct collaborative research and bring together partners from the academic world and the field.
In this context and during the year 2021, she actively participates in the development of collaborative research on the topic of professional roles in the field of home-based intervention in EPS.
