Prevention of early school leaving in Switzerland and in France: which family strategies according to social origin?

This study seeks to better understand the strategies put into place by families when faced with the risk of their child dropping out of school.

Brief research overview

Although school can sometimes contribute to increase inequalities in levels of attainment, and although everyone does not face the same risks of leaving school without a diploma, the family strategies implemented to ensure the educational success of young people vary according to the cultural and social capital of individuals (Blaya, 2010; Coleman, 1988; Epstein, 1990; Lahire, 1998). Certain families resort to colonization or consumption strategies at school (Ballion, 1982; Van Zanten, 2001), while others engage into a process pathologizing dropping out, or even one of avoidance. In line with these studies, we will interview young people at risk of dropping out and their families, and will put into perspective the strategies deployed to address the leeway given to families in the school trajectories in those two countries.

Main objectives

The aim of this study is:

To listen to young people who have dropped out of school and their families in order to discuss with them the family practices deployed to prevent dropping out or to promote a reconnection with school.
