“I am passionate about the idea of encouraging pupil retention, on a daily basis, in classes: emotional support, and didactic knowledge for teaching are, from my point of view, powerful means of action to promote everyone’s success at school.”
A mathematics teacher according to her initial qualification, Isabelle Demonty quickly moved towards educational sciences. She obtained her master’s degree in educational sciences in 1999 from the University of Liège. She then broadened her training with a diploma of advanced studies in disciplinary didactics at the University of Paris VII. In 2017, she completed her thesis in educational sciences entitled “Regards croisés sur le développement de la pensée algébrique : entre raisonnements des élèves et connaissances des enseignants” [“Overlapping perspectives on the development of algebraic thinking: between student reasoning and teacher knowledge”] at the University of Liège. Her research activities revolve around two main themes: on the one hand, the governance of education systems and on the other hand, the analysis of teaching frameworks. With regards to pupil retention, she is involved in both large international surveys (such as PISA) investigating educational policies, and collaborative research projects with teachers, which make it possible to investigate the issues linked to school retention in more detail, through effective classroom practices, both in primary school and at the start of secondary education. Currently, she is a senior lecturer at the University of Liège and a researcher in the field of the analysis of teaching systems and practices.
Her research work focuses on the learning of mathematics, on action research, international surveys, and didactics. Since 2019, she has been part of a research project on pilot experiences focusing on differentiation and individualized mathematics support at the start of secondary education.
